70th Anniversary of 1st Morton Brownies

Fantastic morning celebrating 1st Morton Brownies 70th anniversary 

We planted 7 trees, one for each decade.

Delicious tea & cakes followed the hard work! 

Good Turn points added when a few Brownies did the dishes !!

Friendship Fair

On Saturday 7th October Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and Leaders from all over the Dumfries & Galloway County got together for fun at the fair.

Experiencing fun houses, escape rooms, bungy trampolines, bouncy castles, crazy golf, circus games and much more...

Massive thank yous go to all the leaders involved with the organisation, to the Rangers who helped run the tea/coffee and the escape rooms and to the Scouts who setup the marquees for us.

Denmark

Early in the holidays several Rangers and their leaders visited Denmark and Sweden, meeting the British Ambassador at the Embasey. 

End of Term

Many units were celebrating the end of term...

Dalbeattie guides chilled out with yoga, mindfulness and mehendi.

Lochinch Rainbows welcomed new girls making their promise.

Castle Douglas Rainbows had their first ever sleepover with a unicorn theme.

Guiding from around the county took over The Fullarton cinema to watch The Little Mermaid.

Kirkcolm guiding finished with a picnic and a paddle.

Dalbeattie Guides enjoyed outdoor cooking and a water fight.

Stewartry Rangers met at The Dhoon and created Little mermaid sculptures.

Lochinch Brownies finished with football golf, promise ceremonies and a buffet.

Special Events

4th Dumfries Brownies and Kelloholm district took part in their local galas and parades.

Lochinch Brownies invited "Pretty in Resin" to help with t-shirt printing.

Girlguiding from around the county took over Mabie Farm Park for the day.

Stewartry Distict have been chosen as the charity of the month by Laggan.

They were both presented Youth Volunteering Awards at Dalbeattie last night for their volunteering in Girl Guiding and animal charities they support.

Experiences to be remembered!

Kirkinner Brownies completed their Wooly Sheep challenge visitn a blue texel sheep farm and finished the term with a stay at Balnab Dairy and Featherdown Farmstay Holidays.

Castle Douglas Rainbows continued with their nature badge and started on the new Biosphere badge.

Lucy from Kirkcudbright Brownies gained the highly acclaimed GOLD award! Very Well Done Lucy.

Kelloholm Guides continued their support for Kirkconnel & Kelloholm development trust with their planting at Kirkconnel Railway Station

Annan Brownies have been working towards their Have Adventures theme, completed Fathers Day gifts and celebrating 8 Bronze awards and a Silver Award - Well done girls!

The Big Help Out

To mark the Kings Coronation, units from around Dumfries and Galloway have been volunteering for other organisations or around their local area.

1st Castle Douglas Rainbows helped out Stewartry Community Gardens, weeding and planting the gardens

1st Kelloholm Brownies and Rainbows took part in a litter pick around their local meeting hall

Kirkinner Brownies volunteered to weed and clean outside of their meeting hall

Maxwelltown West Brownies help produce decorations for their local coronation celebration and decorate the hall

Middlebie Rainbows & Brownies joined Middlebie Garden Group to plant flowers around the village and clean the street signs 

North West Rainbows & Brownies have completed multiple litter picks around their local area

3rd & 7th Annan Brownies, Annan Guides and Lower Annandale Rangers are volunteering at Lydiafield Care Home to weed and plant their garden for the residents.

Over the last few weeks our units have made puppets, been curling, tossed pancakes, celebrated Valentines day, learnt through science experiments, and celebrated Thinking Day.

What do we do??

In the past week Castle Douglas Rainbows have looked at science experiments, Annan Brownies have learnt about DIY tools and how to use them, Dalbeattie Guides have completed some practical DIY building bookshelves, and Middlebie Rainbows and Brownies have tried out curling at Lockerbie ice rink.

What we do...

The Family History Society, 9 Glasgow Street, Dumfries DG2 9AF have very kindly put on a window display from items in the Girlguiding Dumfries & Galloway Archives.

The display will be available to see from now until the end of February.

Chinese New Year

Castle Douglas Rainbows, Annan Guides and Lower Annandale Rangers have all been completing activities around Chinese new year, from Chinese dragons and lanterns to shadow puppet shows and making fortune cookies.

The President’s Award

The President’s Award is presented annually by our County President, to a unit who fulfils the following criteria:

a) To the unit who fulfilled the Five Essentials of Guiding.

b) Showed good examples of a wide and varied programme throughout the year.

c) Showed good examples of the girls enjoying activities and events away from the meeting place.

d) Showed good examples of involving the local community in the unit and providing service in the local community.

The Falkland Shield

The Falkland Shield was donated, in 1990, to Mrs Rosalind Hall, by Mrs W H Fullerton, President of the Falkland Islands Girl Guide Branch Association. The shield was presented in thanks for the training organised by Mrs Hall for Guiders, after the Falklands War.

 

Although the shield was presented to Mrs Hall, she wished the shield to be awarded annually, for outstanding acts of courage or community service within the County for any girl or adult who is a member of Girlguiding Dumfriesshire.

The Hazel Award

The Hazel Award was created in memory of Hazel McCulloch, at the request of her husband Stewart and her family. Hazel was a Guide Guider in Dumfries, District Commissioner, Deputy County Commissioner and latterly County Registration Secretary.

 

Hazel loved all aspects of Guiding and valued the commitment of the Guiders. For this reason the award, a brooch, is presented annually to a leader without any County appointments, who has given outstanding service to her unit.
